THE TRUTH ABOUT LIP FILLER MIGRATION – WHAT CAUSES IT & HOW TO PREVENT IT

Lip filler migration is something most clients worry about, but in most cases, it’s simply the result of technique, placement or overfilling. Migration happens when filler moves outside the natural lip border, creating a fuller and slightly puffy appearance above the lip. Understanding why it occurs helps reassure clients that the issue is both avoidable and fixable.
We explain migration using three main causes:
Fast Injection
Injecting too quickly can disrupt the tissue and prevent the filler from settling evenly. A slow, controlled technique gives the product time to integrate properly and reduces the risk of it moving into surrounding areas that are outside of the lip border.
Incorrect Placement
The most common cause of migration is placing filler too close to the vermillion border or wrong depth injection. Even a small deviation can push the product into the upper lip skin rather than keeping it in the natural lip structure. This is why precise anatomical knowledge and experience are essential for lip filler treatments.
Overfilling the Lips
Lips have limited capacity when it comes to filler. When too much product is added in a small area, whether it is during a single session or through frequent top ups, the filler has nowhere to settle; therefore, begins to migrate upwards.
Natural Anatomy Also Plays a Role
Some clients naturally have thinner lip tissue, weaker borders or low cupid’s bow. These factors can make them more prone to migration and require a more tailored, detailed technique. A good experience injector would start with 0’5 ml and after 4 weeks inject another 0’5 and that make it perfect.
How We Treat Lip Filler Migration
If migration has already happened, it can be corrected. The most effective way to treat it is to dissolve the migrated filler, allowing the lips to settle and then restoring volume gradually using the correct amount and placement. This ensures the lip shape looks even, defined and aligned with the client’s natural lip proportions.
Lip filler migration is preventable with careful technique, appropriate volume and a clear understanding of lip anatomy. If you’re unsure whether your lips have migrated or changed shape over time, we offer complimentary consultations to assess the area and recommend the safest plan.
